My first dabble with Amateur Radio was taking part in a contact organised by my soon-to-be secondary school with Tim Peake whilst he was on the International Space Station. The contact - the first one in a series of 10 during his mission - was widely publicised at the time and it was very enjoyable to be part of the hubbub, even if in the end we suffered a fair bit of interference. I went on to earn my foundation licence - M6SQY - a couple of years later, before then earning my Intermediate licence - 2x0SPO. Whilst I am not as active now as I have been in the past, sticking mostly to VHF, I still really enjoy the hobby and - with more time - would like to get back to lower frequencies.
Using my secondary school's callsign (M0SCY), I've been able to take part in a number of RSGB contests. These are always great fun and a great challenge, espcially so when there's a group of you in the same room and you're all taking turns to help one another out. We never did fantastically but always had a good time which is far more important! I've also operated as part of the Youngsters on the Air programme. Again, having a special event callsign is always great for attracting some interesting contacts and I also enjoyed talking to student unfamiliar with amateur radio of the fun you can have through this hobby.
Looking forward to hopefully speaking to you on the air soon! There's some more information at the links below:
